Two volumes bound as one. 'English Dialects' is an interesting analysis into the dialects and localised pronunciations within Britain. The author uses Glossic, a system of phonetic spelling, to indicate the differences between the many dialects within Britain. Written by Alexander John Ellis. Ellis was a mathematician and phonetician, who developed two phonetic alphabets. phonotype, and the Palaeotype alphabet. 'A History of English Sounds' also uses Glossic to analyse the changes of the English language throughout history. The work looks back to Old English, and traces the changes, however subtle, throughout Middle to Early Modern, concluding with late Modern English. Henry Sweet was a phonetician and grammarian, who, though studying German at college in Oxford, quickly became recognised for his talents in language when the Philological Society published one of his papers on Old English. With two maps loosely inserted to a pocket to the front. One map is showing the Lowland dialect districts, and the other English dialect districts.
