Description

Leather Binding, Scarce, Signed Binding

In a half calf binding, with decorative gilt to the spine, with the binder's label of Thomas Purves to the front paste downs. All edges marbled. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Ink inscription to the title pages. Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873) was an English bishop in the Church of England, and the third son of William Wilberforce. He was one of the greatest public speakers of his day, and his now best remembered for his opposition to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution at a debate in 1860. These volumes contain his essays printed in the Quarterly Review, a literary and political periodical. Among other topics, he writes in protest against the East African Slave Trade and in opposition to Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species'.

Condition

In a half calf binding. Externally very smart, with minimal rubbing to the extremities and spine, and a little bumping to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for a scattering of spots to the first and last few pages.
