Colour Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

A group of six charming volumes concerning all flowering plants of Great Britain, dated from Copac, complete with six volumes. The first edition appeared in 1855 in five volumes. 

A famous work by the successful botanical illustrator Anne Pratt, listing all flowering plants, grasses, sedges, and ferns in Great Britain with studies and detailed descriptions of plants and flowers, classified through the Natural System adapted from those of Jussieu and Decandolle.  

Each plant is illustrated by beautiful chromolithographed plates by Anne Pratt. With three-hundred-and-seventeen fine and botanically correct colour plates, one in black and white as called for. Collated against the number of plates to the spine of each volume, vol. II notes 40 however features thirty-nine as seen in other copies of the same edition. Complete.

Condition

In the original publisher's uniform full cloth bindings. Externally excellent with minor shelf wear only, spine lightly bumped to the head and tail. MS bookplate to the front pastedowns. Gift inscription to Mary Squire 'from her affectionate love Herbert' dated 1881 to the verso front free endpaper of vol. I. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to the occasional leaf, otherwise the pages are generally very clean and bright throughout. With three-hundred-and-seventeen coloured plates, one in black and white. Collated, complete.
