'The Builder' was founded by Joseph Aloysius Hansom in 1843. Under the editorship of George Godwin the magazine became an important and successful professional architectural magazine.  An important periodical, it offers an interesting insight into the developments in architecture during the year, with in-depth articles on various prominent buildings being built or proposed.

A significant portion of this volume is dedicated to the Vienna's World Fair, a large world exposition held in the capital with the motto 'Culture and Education'. This exposition commemorated Franz Joseph's 25th year as Emperor and was visited by over seven million people.  Over twenty-six thousand exhibitors were houses in the Russian pavilion, Japanese pavilion, Ottoman pavilion, Italian pavilion, and New Zealand pavilion.

Including a folding plate showing the proposed Natural History Museum in South Kensington, which eventually opened in 1881. Also with a plate showing the floor plan of the Museum.

Plate facing page 607 of a block of offices in Leadenhall Street is provided in facsimile.
