The first edition, first issue of this famous and important autobiography by John Stuart Mill, without errata leaf to rear (only the second issue had the errata leaf). English philosopher, political economist, and MP, Mill was one of the most influential figures in nineteenth century classical liberalism, he contributed massively to social and political theory, and political economy.
A was a prominent utilitarian, and saw liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual as opposed to unlimited state and social control.
This fascinating autobiography provides a first hand account into his childhood and early education, as well as development of thought and career, and chapters on close friendships up until 1870, three years before his death.

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear, boards and spine bumped, head and tail of spine chipped, rear joint cracked with boards holding firm, minor damp mar to rear board, general light soiling. Faint previous ownership inscription to front pastedown and recto front blank leaf, undated. Hinges slightly strained, holding firm. Binding firm. Pages generally very clean throughout.
