The first edition, second issue of this autobiography of John Stuart Mill, with errata leaf to rear of the volume. English philosopher, political economist, and MP, Mill was one of the most influential figures in nineteenth century classical liberalism, he contributed massively to social and political theory, and political economy. 

A was a prominent utilitarian, and saw liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual as opposed to unlimited state and social control. 

This fascinating autobiography provides a first hand account into his childhood and early education, as well as development of thought and career, and chapters on close friendships up until 1870, three years before his death.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear, bumped to extremities of spine and boards, general light soiling to covers, rear joint starting but holding firm. Previous owner's ink inscription to front blank page, dated 1956. Internally, firmly bound. Pages very clean.
