A scarce two volume work.
Volume I is illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and fifty-four plates, with these fifty-four plates containing seventy-one mounted engravings. Volume II is illustrated with with sixty-one plates, containing eighty-four mounted engravings. Collated, complete.
These illustrations are reproduced from the original engravings, and arranged by order of date of publication.
Also present in this scarce work is an essay on the genius and character of Hogarth, by essayist Charles Lamb.
A wonderful collection of the works of the prominent English painter, engraver, pictorial satirist, social critic, editorial cartoonist and occasional writer on art. Hogarth was best known for his series A Harlot's Progress and A Rake's Progress, both of which are reproduced here.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bumping to spine heads and tails, and board perimeters. Fading to fore edge of front board of volume I, and centre of rear board. Hinges strained, and a touch tender. Vast majority of leaves loosely inserted, due to gutta percha binding, as is common with this work. Tide marks to leaf perimeters, with foxing to first few leaves, and significant further spotting throughout each volume.
