What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Satire inspired by Thomas Day's best-selling children's anthology The History of Sandford and Merton, first published anonymously in 1783, which retained much popularity through to the nineteenth century. This work was written by F. C. Burnand, with a preface that mentions it will "teach you what to don't."

Featuring numerous illustrations-in text as well as full page plates by Linley Sambourne, English cartoonist and illustrator known for his contributions to Punch magazine, rising to the position of "first cartoonist" in his final decade.

This work, as many children's works of the time, features characters and illustrations that stereotype and generalise cultures and backgrounds, with evident elements of racism.

Condition
