What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

An uncommon work, particularly in this binding. This is the green cloth binding, with gilt stamped designs to the front board. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper, in pencil. With one hundred and twenty illustrations by Arthur Hughes, with the engravings by the Brothers Dalziel. A comprehensive collection of nursery rhymes. There are poems drawing on Rossetti's own childhood, and this work contains a wide range of topics. There are some verses regarding sadness and nursery, which may not be included in a modern nursery book. A contemporary review for this work from the Sunday Times notes 'some are droll, some playful, and others deep, mystical, and solemn, but all bespeak in the writer a mind touched to all finest issues and a possession in its fullest extent of the 'vision and faculty divine'. With the publisher's adverts to the rear. Christina Rossetti was a romantic, devotional author. Her children's poems 'Goblin Market' and 'Remember' remain famous to this day. Rossetti's popularity remained strong posthumously, as scholars studied Freudian themes in her work. She was a great influence to Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, Elizabeth Jennings and Philip Larkin.
