The second revised edition of this work, exploring the private garden maintained by Alfred Smee, English surgeon and chemist, as well as an enthusiastic amateur gardening and horticulturalist. This volume gives an account of his experimental garden's plan and culture, as well as a description of geology, botany, and natural history. He describes the planting of the garden in Wallington on the banks of River Wandle, with a natural history and archaeology of the area. 

Fragments of his ornamental garden survive in Beddington Park. With twenty-three full page plates and numerous engravings in text. Collated, lacking only plate 2. Advertisements to the rear.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities of the boards, a minor chipping. With general light soiling to the boards and minor faint damp marking. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor loss to the half title. With a slight tidemark to the frontispiece and title page affecting through to p. vii, as well as to the last few leaves, some leaves. With a minor faint spotting scattered throughout and a touch of age toning to the leaves, as usual. With twenty-three full page plates and numerous engravings in text. Collated, lacking only plate 2.
