Complete in two volumes. A collection of excerpts from various influential British authors throughout history. Divided into what is intended to be half-hour sections, with the intention of the work being read over a year. Volume I with a frontispiece, and one plate. Volume II with a frontispiece, and one plate. Edited by Charles Knight, a publisher and author who contributed to 'The Penny Cyclopaedia', and 'The Penny Magazine'. Label to the front pastedown of Volume I, 'Royal Naval School. This volume was presented to P. J. Huggind, as a prize for proficiency in Germany, 1st class - 1873, E. M. Slater, Headmaster'. Undated, dated from Copac from a copy held at the National Trust.
In a prize binding from the Royal Naval School. Externally, generally smart. Some light rubbing to the boards and spines, resulting in some loss of leather. Minor bumping to the extremities. Prize label to the front pastedown of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot.
