What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Illustrated, Rebound
Collated, complete with a frontispiece and forty plates. With the half-title. Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Ex-library, with stamps for Chicheser Diocesan Conference and Retreat House to the half-title, title page and dedication leaf. With a gift inscription to the verso of front endpaper, 'Lear In Corsica for Julian and Kathleen Symons'. Below this is a poem told through the form of limerick, a literary form that Lear made popular. The poem regards a gentleman who 'packed his Nonsence up, like love, inside a box' and leaves on a coach. The poem could be a parallel of Lear, or in homage to him, as he was known for his literary nonsense. Lear was an English artist, and author. His literary nonsense poetry and prose earned him a great reputation in Victorian Britain. He had published travel journals previously, on his travels to Italy and Albania. This work has been produced to Lear's journals he composed whilst travelling in Corsica and examples of landscapes he painted whilst there. A lovely guide to Corsica in the nineteenth century.
