What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The first edition of this very scarce dictionary.

With the preface stating that "the completed work issues from the press in 1870."

Bound in half calf, with cloth boards and gilt detailing to the spine.

An impressive example of a Latin-English dictionary, begun in 1855 and comprising an exhaustive series of translations and definitions.

Co-written by William Smith and Theophilus D. Hall, who set out to complete this reference due to no pre-existing English-Latin dictionary being of useful and practical quality in their eyes.

Smith was an English lexicographer noted for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools.
