First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

First edition.

Illustrated book plate from prior owner Frederick Chapman (1864-1943), Paleontologist to the National Museum in Melbourne, Australia as well as the inaugural Australian Commonwealth Paleontologist. Another prior owner's bookstamp, 'G. Buchdal', could be the German-English philosopher of science Gerd Buchdahl (1914-2001).

This work by David Page is intended as a general overview of geology and its laws, principles, and theories for amateurs and young geologists. Chapter headings include titles such as  'Geology- Its Aim and Objects', 'Geology as a Branch of General Education', and 'Rocks- Their Formation and Metamorphoses'. 

David Page was a 19th-century Scottish geologist and scientific author, who was also the President of the Edinburgh Geological Society.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Cloth is bright with nice gilt illustration on spine. Some discolouration and marks on spine. Marks on boards. A bit of bumping on extremities has resulted in a bit of loss to top corner on front board. A bit of fading along front joint. Rear hinge is starting, but remains firm. A few marks to paste downs. Prior owner's illustrated bookplate on front pastedown. Prior owner's ink inscription and stamp on recto of front end paper, as well as half title page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a bit of age-toning to margins and spotting mostly to the first and last few pages.
