An eight volume set of selected works by nineteenth-century Scottish geologist, folklorist, and evangelical Hugh Miller. 

Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth. 

This set comprises of: 

The Old Red Sandstone, or, New Walks in an Old Field, the eleventh edition published in 1869. Containing fourteen illustrated plates, one of which is folding, collated and complete. 

My Schools and Schoolmasters, or, The Story of My Education, the twelfth edition published in 1869. 

First Impressions of England and Its People, the ninth edition published in 1869.

Sketch-Book of Popular Geology, the second edition published in 1869. Containing six lectures and lengthy appendix. 

Leading Articles on Various Subjects, the first edition published in 1870. Edited by Miller's son-in-law, Rev. John Davidson. Containing an engraved frontispiece portrait of Miller.

Footprints of the Creator, or, The Asterolepis of Stromness, the twelfth edition published in 1870. Including a memoir written by Louis Agassiz. Including sixty-seven in-text woodcuts, collated and complete. 

Essays Historical and Biographical, Political and Social, Literary and Scientific, the fifth edition published in 1872.

Edinburgh and Its Neighbourhood, Geological and Historical; with the Geology of the Bass Rock, the fifth edition published in 1873. Containing an engraved frontispiece and a further illustrated plate, along with numerous in-text illustrations. Collated and complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with some general shelf wear and bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities. A few ink marks to the bottom edge of 'Essays', the rear board of 'Schools and Schoolmasters', and the rear board of 'Footprints of the Creator'. Spine is darkening slightly to 'Leading Articles'. A small amount of loss of the cloth to the tail of the spine on 'Essays'. A blind-stamp to the front free-endpaper of 'Edinburgh', and an ink inscription to the front free-endpaper of 'Edinburgh', dated 1958. Some sticker residue to the front free-endpaper of 'Essays'. Internally, hinges are starting on all volumes. Front hinge to 'Footprints' has failed. Remainder of binding is generally firm. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages, and the odd instance of spotting throughout. A small tidemark to the head of the free-endpapers of 'First Impressions of England'. Oherwise pages are generally bright and clean.
