Scarce first edition.
Two volume set containing Volume I and II of 'Choice Stove and Greenhouse Plants'.
Illustrated with folding frontispieces to both volumes, one of which is in colour, as well as several in-text illustrations, most of which were drawn by John Nugent Fitch (1840-1927), a British botanical illustrator and lithographer. He is best known for his contributions to 'The Orchid Album', as well as his illustrations for 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine'.
This an informative set of works intended for 'amateur horticulturists and young gardeners' in their efforts to maintain a flourishing greenhouse.
Vol I is titled 'Choice Stove and Greenhouse Flowering Plants' (1869), and has over one-thousand species and varieties of plants, as well as instructions for their cultivation. With one colour folding frontispiece.
Vol II is titled 'Choice Stove and Greenhouse Ornamental-Leaved Plants' (1870), and has almost eight-hundred species of plants. With one black-and-white folding frontispiece, this one drawn by the author, as well as six more illustrated plates and five folding-plates.
Benjamin Samuel Williams (1822-1890) was an English orchidologist and nurseryman. He is best known for the notes that he contributed to 'The Orchid Grower's Manual', and 'The Orchid Album'.

With thirty-one pages of publisher's adverts to Vol I and twenty pages of publisher's adverts to Vol II.
With illustrated bookplates to front paste downs belonging to Pacocks, Margaretting, as well as an ink inscription to reverse of half title pages belonging to James Harwood.
Collated, complete.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Minimal bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of spine, with fading to spine and the top edge of boards. A few marks to boards as well. Prior owner's bookplate to front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with age-toning to the text, mostly to the margins and a few spots that increases to the first and last few pages. Plates are lightly age-toned with the odd spot. Colour frontispiece to Vol I has been neatly excised from binding, and is held loosely within the text.
