Clara Lucas Balfour (1808-1878) was an English author, philanthropist and campaigner for temperance. She was a popular writer, in particular handling social and moral themes in her works, which include 'Women of Scripture', 'Happy Evenings: a Home Record', and 'Moral Heroism: the Trials and Triumphs of the Great and Good'. This volume, intended to be taken as advice by newlyweds, was first published in 1850, and ran twenty-three editions.

In a wonderful full crushed morocco binding by Burns and Co, with elegant gilt detail to the spine and covers.

Contains a lovely full colour bookplate to a Mrs Isaac Connor, dated June 1875.

Includes a full plate frontispiece illustration engraved by S. Allen.

Condition

In a full crushed morocco binding. Externally very smart, some minor rubbing to the spine. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, the odd spot but otherwise pages bright and clean.
