First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
The very scarce first edition. Held institutionally in only five UK libraries. Rebacked in the publisher's original full cloth decorative binding. With an engraved title page and twenty-six plates. Collated complete. A lovely work containing numerous illustrations by J. Moyr Smith, paired alongside short poems and quotations by such writers as William Shakespeare, Edmund Spenser and Percy Bysshe Shelley. John Moyr Smith was a Scottish architect, artist and designer, best known for his work on ceramic tiles. With a bookplate to the front paste-down and two stamps to the title page for Sir Compton Mackenzie. Mackenzie was a Scottish writer, cultural commentator and Scottish nationalist, best known as one of the co-founders of the National Party of Scotland. His most notable works are, 'Whisky Galore', and, 'The Monarch of the Glen', two comic novels set in the Scottish highlands.
Condition
In the publisher's original full cloth rebacked binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Fading to the spine. Marks to the boards and spine. Light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Bookplate for Compton Mackenzie to the front paste-down. Internally, binding strained but still firm. Pages age-toned to the edges with spotting throughout. Handling marks throughout, however the images are still very bright and clear.
