A limited edition, one of four-hundred-and-ninety-three copies printed on papier vergé, the present number one-hundred-and-twenty-seven. The fifteenth edition of this work with additional maxims compared to earlier editions. Including a biography of Rochefoucauld to the beginning by Louis Lacour.

François de La Rochefoucauld, noted French moralist and author of maxims and memoirs from the seventeenth century. This work was originally published in French in 1665, and established his position among the men of letters of the time.

Condition

In a beautiful full pebbled morocco binding with intricate gilt tooling to the spine, decorative gilt embossing to the boards, gilt to the edges, new green endpapers. Previous owner's gift inscription to a front blank page, 'To my wife,' dated 1901 by J. F. Payne. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean.
