Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A very scarce work, this is Thomas Hugo's study of four nunneries found in Somerset, bound under a general title and with an index to the rear.

Hugo discusses four medieval nunneries: Mynchin Buckland Priory and Preceptory, Canyngton Priory, Mynchin Barrow Priory and White Hall, Ilchester.

The preface explains that 'all who share in the happily increasing reverence for Ancient Sisterhoods and the work of Women in holy things will find a very large amount of information', including 'annals of their impropriated benefices, from the earliest times to the death of Queen Mary.

Illustrated with five plates, consisting of one frontispiece, three plates to 'Mynchin Buckland' and one plate to 'Canyngton Priory'. Collated, complete.

This is the work of Thomas Hugo, a member of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society who maintained a keen interest in Somerset, writing many books on the subject including 'The History of Taunton Priory' and 'A Ramble by the Tone, in a series of Letters to the Taunton Courier'.

With a publisher's advertisement for a similar work from the author bound in to the start of the work.
