The first edition of this work, an uncommon study of the development in railways, steamers, and telegraphs in the mid-nineteenth century, providing an insight into the late progress of the Industrial Revolution in Great Britain. By George Dodd, author of 'The Food of London' and other works. Including details on the main features of the railway-system, insight into the rapid manner in which the Paddle, Screw, and the Iron-clad have revolutionised the navies of Europe and America, and a full account of the submarine cables installed in the bosom of the Atlantic. 

With full page plates and illustrations in text. No half title. Index to the rear.

Condition

In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, some chipping. F K M Carver's bookplate to the front pastedown. Previous ownership inscription to the verso of the title page, dated 1985. Lacking the front free endpaper. No half title. The rear hinge is slightly strained, holding firm, the front hinge was amateurly paper repaired by a previous owner. The volume firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean with some age toning, as usual due to the type of paper used. With full page plates and illustrations in text.
