Description

Folding Maps, Very Scarce

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the title page, dated 1867. 18 folding maps. Collated complete. Appleton's travel guides were published by D. Appleton & Company of New York. The firm's series of guides to railway travel in the United States began in the 1840s. Soon after, it issued additional series of handbooks for tourists in the United States, Europe, Canada and Latin America. This travel guide covers the main cities, towns, and places of interest in the United States and the British provinces, with travel routes and hotel suggestions. Includes a calendar for 1867-1868 and 12 pages for 'The Traveller's Memorandum'. 17 pages of advertisements to the front and 51 pages of advertisements to the rear.

Condition

In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, with some wear to the extremities and some losses to the head and tail of the spine. One small loss of cloth to the front joint and some faint staining to both boards. The spine and extremities are slightly faded. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot and handling mark to the first and last couple of pages. Small closed tears to folding maps facing the title page, and facing pages 112, 154, 172, and 291.
