What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Early Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Uncommon

Bound by Zaehnsdorf in full morocco.

Complete in two volumes.

The second edition. First published in 1865.

Written and illustrated by noted English historian of stained glass, Charles Winston. Aside from his job as a lawyer, Winston became widely known as an expert in stained glass, and acted as a consultant for stained glass windows in various religious buildings, including St. Paul's Cathedral, Norwich Cathedral and Temple Church in London.

This historical work explores the different styles of stained glass paintings, also providing hints on glass painting and how to gain employment of this manner.

Profusely illustrated throughout, with Volume II containing seventy-five plates and a frontispiece, many of which have been coloured-in. Collated, complete.

With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England.

Bookseller label of Henry Walker.
