What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Illustrated, with a frontispiece and pictorial title page. Taken from designs by D G Rossetti, the author's brother. Gift inscription to the half-title 'Beatrix M Muirhead from her smart affectionate brother, Bertram A Muirhead Jan 1 1868'. 'The Prince's Progress' was Rossetti's second volume of poetry. It tells the story of a princess awaiting the return of her prince. This copy also contains an additional 46 poems. In a minimalist binding, due to Dante Gabriel Rossetti's disagreement with the ornamentation of many Victorian books. The gold design references clasps and nailheads on medieval books, and is a perpetuation of Rossetti's aesthetic. The wood engraved illustrations, accompanied by the simplistic binding, provides the integrated role in the art of the book as an object. The medieval allusions and organic motifs reflect the theme of growth and change in the text. Christina Rossetti was a romantic, devotional author. Her children's poems 'Goblin Market' and 'Remember' remain famous to this day. Rossetti's popularity remained strong posthumously, as scholars studied Freudian themes in her work. She was a great influence to Virginia Woolf, Ford Madox Ford, Elizabeth Jennings and Philip Larkin. An exceptional, very bright, copy of this work.
