Description

Folding Maps, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

An exciting work, detailing an American effort to determine the fate of the lost expedition of an exploratory Arctic voyage lead by British Navy Captain Sir John Franklin. With folding map and vignette and full plate illustrations.

This is the work of American explorer and medical officer in the American Navy, Elisha Kent Kane, the leader of the Second Grinnell expedition of 1853-1855 to determine the fate of Franklin. Kane's expedition set a new record for northward penetration, delineated 960 miles of unexplored northern coastline, and discovering the long sought open Polar Sea. This account of the journey was first published only five years after the expedition concluded.

This work is from the library of Sir Peter Markham Scott, a British naval officer, conservationist and ornithologist, and the only child of renowned Navy officer and Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. During Robert Falcon Scott’s career he led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions, the 1901-1904 Discovery expedition, and the 1910-1913 Terra Nova expedition, on which he died. After his early death he became a celebrated hero amongst the British Public.

This work bears Peter Scott’s owner’s inscription to the verso of the frontispiece.
