First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding
Bound in cloth with gilt lettering and extensive gilt and blind-stamped decoration. This text contains the following works: 'The Vicar of Wakefield', 'The Traveller', 'The Deserted Village', 'The Haunch of Venison', 'The Captivity: An Oratorio', 'Retaliation', 'Miscellaneous Poems', 'The Good-Natured Man', and 'She Stoops to Conquer'. Also includes 'A Sketch of the Life of Oliver Goldsmith'. Continuing a bookplate of David Graham to the front pastedown, and an ink inscription on the front free endpaper. With one hundred illustrations drawn by George John Pinwell, the British watercolour painter, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. The Brothers Dalziel were a highly productive firm of Victorian engravers founded in 1839 by George Dalziel and his brother Edward Dalziel. They were later joined by John Dalziel and Thomas Dalziel.
Condition
In a cloth binding. Externally, slightly worn. Slightly bumped to extremities, Rubbing with loss to the gilt, and a stain to rear board. Very small splits to cloth to head of front hinge. Front hinge slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound, strained in places with cords exposed. Pages generally clean with scattered spotting to first and last few pages.
