What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

They were first printed in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany, in 1837. Proving to be very popular indeed, they were compiled into a book, first published in 1840. They can be considered as intentionally humorous pastiches of medieval folklore. Included is the well-known poem Jackdaw of Rhiems, about a Jackdaw who steals a cardinal's ring and is made a saint. They remained popular throughout the 19th century. With many wonderful illustrations.

Condition

In full morocco with gilt detailing to the boards and spine. Externally smart with light shelfwear. There is foxing and light spotting here and there. The binding is starting to loosen around page 262, but is still generally firm.
