A collection of the poems of the popular poet William Cowper, a forerunner of the Romantic poets. He wrote poems that focused on everyday lives and scenes of the English countryside.
Cowper's best known poems and hymns include 'Light Shining out of Darkness', 'The Task', and 'John Gilpin'. He also did a translation of Homer's 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey'.
Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I.
With a memoir of Cowper to Volume I, written by John Newton.
Condition
Bound in full crushed morocco with gilt detailing to the spine. Externally, bright, with just slight rubbing to the boards. Front board to Volume I is detached but present. Binder's stamp to the verso of the front free-endpaper to each volume. Internally, front free-endpaper to Volume I is detached with the front board but present. Otherwise, all volumes firmly bound. Front free-endpapers of Volume I have a few handling marks, otherwise pages are very bright and clean.
