What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

The Cornhill Magazine was a monthly Victorian magazine and literary journal, edited by William Makepeace Thackeray. Under his editorial guidance the paper's large circulation peaked around 110,000. In 1871, the editing was taken over by Leslie Stephens. The first issue appeared in 1860, with a selection of articles on diverse subjects and serialisations of new novels.

The present volume features ninety-four engravings from drawings on wood which illustrated the magazine to authors such as George du Maurier and W. M. Thackeray. Engraved by the brothers Dalziel, W. J. Linton, and Joseph Swain. Collated, without plates 6 '"Mark," she said "the Men are Here"' from J. E. Millais' Framley Personage; 45-48: 'The Escaped Prisoner,' 'Niccolo at Work,' 'The Painted Record,' and 'Coming Home' from F. Leighton's Romola; and 65 '"Mr. Cradell, your hand," said Lupex' from J. E. Millais' The Small House at Allington. With an index to the pictures.

The 1865 edition, following the prior edition issued in 1864. An uncommon volume in all editions.

This work is disbound with every leaf and plate detached but present, expected with a gutta percha binding.
