Fine Binding, Illustrated

Written by the famous nineteenth century writer on natural history, John George Wood.

Illustrated, with numerous vignettes and plates of animals designed by W F Keyl and E Smith.

John George Wood was an English writer who popularised natural history with his writing. He was firstly, a reverend, and continued his priestly work alongside his writings. He wrote several works on various aspects of natural history and also gave occasional lectures on zoology. He became a well known parson-naturalist of the Victorian era.

This work contains writings on various species and genus including burrowing mammalia, burrowing birds, burrowing reptiles, invertebrates and molluscs. Burrowing spiders, burrowing insects, burrowing beetles and more.

Condition

In a half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, in an excellent condition with minor shelfwear to the joints and to the raised bands. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, George Rigby Murray from Canton Gibson, May 8 1867. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean.
