Gilbert Abbott à Beckett was an English humorist. He edited the comic paper Figaro in London and was one of the original staff of Punch, remaining a contributor until his death in 1856. He was an active journalist on The Times and The Morning Herald, contributed a series of light articles to The Illustrated London News, and conducted in 1846 The Almanac of the Month. Alongside his journalistic career he also produced some fifty or sixty plays, among them dramatised versions of Charles Dickens's shorter stories, written in collaboration with Mark Lemon. He is also published a' Comic History of Rome' and 'Comic Blackstone', among others.

John Leech (1817-1864) was a caricaturist and illustrator, know for his work published in humour magazine 'Punch'. He was also the first illustrator of Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'.

Profusely illustrated with two hundred vignette woodcuts and twenty full coloured etchings by John Leech. Collated, complete.

In a wonderful Bickers & Son full calf binding. with a lovely gilt spine.

Gifted to Alfred Wynne Corrie (1856-1919) by his godfather, Christmas 1866. Wynne Corrie was a Major in the Royal Defence Corps in the Army. Contains his ownership bookplate.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally very smart, minor wear to extremities and fading to the spine, with some scratches to the leather of the boards. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown, gift inscription to the endpaper. Internally firmly bound, pages bright and clean.
