Artist's edition. Illustrated with one hundred and twenty-three images. A collection of thirty-four essays and short stories, originally published serially throughout 1819 and 1820. The Sketch Book was among the first widely read works of American literature in Britain and Europe, and helped advance the reputation of American writers with an international audience. It also marks Irving's first use of the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon, which he would continue to employ throughout his literary career. Written by Washington Irving, an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat.
Condition
Bound in full black crushed morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and light fading to the spine. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Further spotting and minor age toning to the endpapers. Library bookplate to the front pastedown.
