The third thousand of this two volume set in the publisher's original cloth bindings, with pictorial gilt to the front board.
Inscribed by the publisher John Murray to Sir Charles Eastlake to the first blank page of Volume I, dated 1865. Inscribed by Sir Charles Eastlake to the first blank page of Volume II. Sir Charles Lock Eastlake (1793-1865) was a British painter, collector, writer, and the first director of the National Gallery. Small stamp to each title page.
Edward Smith-Stanley (1799-1869), 14th Earl of Derby, was a Conservative politician who served three times as the United Kingdom's Prime Minister. In this two volume work, he reproduces Homer's major epic poem the Iliad in English blank verse.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with shelf wear to the joints and extremities, darkening to the spines, and small losses to the head and tail of the spines. Small marks to the spine and front board of Volume II. Front joint to both volumes are slightly strained but are holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean apart from some spotting and offsetting to the first and last few pages.
