Included in this two volume set are: 

I. Plato's Gorgias, Literally Translated, With An Introductory Essay, Containing A Summary of the Argument, by E.M. Cope and published in 1864.

II. The Gorgias of Plato, With English Notes, Introduction, and Appendix by W.H. Thompson and edited by George Long, published in 1871. 

The gorgias, or dialogues, of Plato were originally written in 380 B.C. and depicts a conversation between Socrates and other sophists at a dinner gathering. They discuss the true meaning of rhetoric and identify flaws in the sophistic oratory in Athens at the time. 

Including the bookplate of a previous owner to the front pastedowns, reading: 'E. Libris, Roberti, Comitis, De Crewe'.

Including the previous owner's ink inscription to one of the front free-endpapers in both volumes: 'Robert O.A. Milues, Rev: De Butter Harrow, September 1874'.

Condition

In half calf binding with marble covered boards. Externally, smart, with slight rubbing to the spines and extremities. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Previous owner's ink inscription to one of the front free-endpapers of each volume. Internally, front hinge to 'The Gorgias of Plato' is strained but firm. Both volumes firmly bound. A few light pencil notations in each volume, but otherwise pages bright and clean.
