What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

In the publisher's original cloth binding. This is a very early printing of the work. This second edition was published two months after the first, in April 1863. It was known as 'Antiquity of Man' to contemporary readers and deals with three scientific issues that were prominent at the time: the age of the human race, the existence of ice ages and Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Bookplate to the front pastedown, of an individual from the Vernon family. With publisher's adverts to the start of the work, as called for. This book was Lyell's way of reversing or modifying his own long-held positions on the three issues. It was a bestseller upon its initial publication and had a great impact due to Lyell's presentation and endorsement of the new evidence for human antiquity. A bright copy of this important archaeological text.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with just some minor bumping to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown, Vernon. Evidence of bookplate removal to the recto of front endpaper. Hinges are strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Scattered spotting to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spot.
