These letters show Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's experiences travelling through Europe, Asia, and Africa. The letters begin in 1716, when her husband, Edward Wortley Montagu, was appointed Ambassador at Constantinople. With him, Mary travelled to Vienne, Adrianople, and Constantinople.
These letters document her visiting Rotterdam, the Hague, Cologne, Nuremberg, Prague, Leipzig, Hanover, Belgrade village, Tunia, Geneo, Lyons, Paris, and finally to Dover on her journey back.
The letters show a unique look at the early eighteenth century modes and methods of travelling internationally, at a time when travelling could still be a dangerous endeavour. She also shows the reader the culture and societies in each city she visits. As she was writing the letters to her friends, they are written in a vivid and entertaining manner.
Montagu was also well known for introduction and advocating for the smallpox inoculation to Britain, after having travelled to Turkey. She is best known for her letters written in Turkey.
