What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first edition of this work by British explorer and writer Sir Richard Francis Burton, who held many diplomatic posts and served as captain of the army of the East India Company. Famed for his travels and explorations around the globe, by one count Burton spoke twenty-nine languages.

Collated, illustrated with one plate to volume I, and a frontispiece and two plates to volume II. Lacking a portrait frontispiece of Burton to volume I, and a folding lithographic map.

While serving as British Consul to the Spanish colony of Fernando Po, Burton joined a mission from Lagos to Abeokuta, the capital of the Egba Yoruba tribe. This work details that journey, with particular attention to local customs, flora and fauna, and a description of his explorations in the mountains.

A smart first edition from the celebrated orientalist.
