Rebound, in a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. The original yellow wrappers are bound in at the front of the book. Profusely illustrated by Lear throughout, with one illustration per page. Pages 92 and 97 have suffered loss to the top of the pages, and are lacking half of the image. Edward Lear was an English artist, illustrator, author and poet, known for popularising the genre of literary nonsense. Lear wrote and illustrated a wide range of poems, songs and short stories, many of which conform to his nonsense style that gained him notoriety. 'The Book of Nonsense' was originally published in 1846, this fourteenth edition contains many additions by Lear. This work highlights his humour and nonsensical style through a series of charming limericks and their accompanying illustrations.
Condition
In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Heavy rubbing to the extremities and to the spine. Original wraps are bound in, which are rather creased and soiled. Several leaves have suffered loss to the edges, mostly the preliminaries. In these instances the leaves have been professionally repaired. Instances include pages 48 and 75 as well. Pages 92 and 97 have suffered loss to the top of the page which affects the image, the top half of the page is lacking. Here the leaves have been laid down onto a new leaf. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots.
