This is an important and well regarded comprehensive work on the principles of military combat and war, written by Marshal Marmont. Originally published under 'De l'Esprit des Institutions Militaires', Marmont wrote this work from his own experiences within military campaigns, on and off the battlefield.

Contents include 'Bases and Lines of Operation, and Strategy', 'Tactics', 'Manoeuvres', 'Battles', and 'Retreats'.

Auguste de Marmont (1774-1852) was a French general and nobleman who at one point was Marshal of the Empire. He was awarded the title of Duke of Ragusa, but was eventually exiled to Vienna along with Charles X's entourage after being accused of betraying the Bourbons.

Henry Coppee (1821-1895) was an American educator and writer. He served in the Mexican-American War as a lieutenant, and edited the United States Service Magazine during the American Civil War.
