With sections on administration of criminal law, the various prisons of London, legal London, professional London and the correctional and detentional prisons.

Written by Henry Mayhew (1812-1887), a journalist and social reformer. As well as co-founding Punch, Mayhew published numerous important articles surveying the city's poor; this was compiled into the work 'London Labour and the London Poor'.

Illustrated throughout the text from photographs, including a folding plate. Collated, complete.

Condition

In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed; head of the spine is rather worn, and the extremities and spine are rubbed, as are the boards. Pencil ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
