Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of this biographical work from American newspaper publisher, Methodist minister, book author, prisoner of war, lecturer, and politician William Gannaway Brownlow.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and a number of full plate illustrations.

This work details Brownlow's experiences and opinions regarding the Civil War and Southern secession.  An outspoken and unconditional advocate of the Union, Brownlow ridiculed secession until Confederate authorities suppressed his publications, caused him to flee his native Tennessee in late 1861.

An immensely popular work: completed in May 1862, by September the book had sold over 100,000 copies.

This work was acquired from the sale of American novelist Paul Gallico's library. Gallico was a prolific writer, but is perhaps now best remembered for his 1969 novel 'The Poseidon Adventure', adapted into the successful 1972 motion picture.

With eight pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.

Condition
