The scarce first edition of geologist James Smith's mid nineteenth century geological study of the newer Pliocene and post-Tertiary periods, between roughly two and five million years ago.
Based upon Smith's observations conducted chiefly in the basin of the Clyde, through which he became acquainted with many fossils of the glacial period. With chapters on sea level change in the west of Scotland, elevated marine beds in the Clyde, and a catalogue of shells from the glacial deposits of Britain and Ireland.
Illustrated with four chromolithograph plates of views, and numerous vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
With four pages of publishers advertisements to the rear.

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Loss of cloth to back strip head. Front and rear joints starting, with boards holding firm. Bookseller's label to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd light handling mark or spot.
