Description

Original Binding, Very Scarce

A very scarce work. 'Pastoral Life' was Edward Monro's last greatest, and is full of heartwarming and humorous recollections of his time as a pastor. This copy is part I which is all that was published, 'The Clergyman at Home and in the Pulpit'. It was Monro's belief that the clergy should try to seek a deeper and more sympathetic understating of their parishioners, by visiting and talking to them, as well as helping them in their needs. Some of Monro's other works include 'Parochial Work', 'Sermons Principally on the Responsibilities of the Ministerial Office', 'The Parish, and 'Parochial Papers for the Clergyman, the Schoolmaster, and the Family'. Ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper, 'With the Publisher's Compliments, Oxford Oct 23 1864(?)'. Bookplate to the front pastedown belonging to Henry Parry Liddon, a fellow theologian who worked at the University of Oxford.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing and marking to the boards. Small chips to the head of the spine label. A little rubbing and discolouration to the spine label. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to a Henry Parry Liddon, with an institutional stamp from a college library to the tail of the bookplate. Ink inscription to the verso to the front endpaper, 'With the Publisher's Complimetns, Oxford Oct 23 1864(?)'. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the odd scattered spot, mostly to the first few pages. Textblock from pages 3 to 14 is lifting and may detach with further handling.
