Description

Leather Binding

In the original French. A new edition of this work. Incomplete in eleven volumes, being volumes I-XI of a total of XIV volumes. A collection of the letters written from Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, the Marchioness de Sevigne, to her daughter Francoise-Marguerite de Sevigne, the Countess de Grignan, the letters spanning almost thirty years. Knowing that her letters were being copied and circulated, Marie carefully censored them to provide a little bit of privacy. Marie Sevigne, is best known for her thorough documentation of life in the court of Louis XIV, and general aristocratic life in the seventeenth century. She was a prolific letter writer, and her letters show a very interesting insight into that period in history. As Marie was widowed at a young age, and never remarried, she had an interesting and unusual life at court, as she was respected as a wife would be, but she wasn't hindered by living husband's demands. Marie lived to see many interesting events, including the trial and execution of Madame de Brinvilliers. Marie was also good friend with the author Madame de La Fayette, who wrote 'The Princess of Cleves'. Edited by M. Monmerque.
