Description

First Edition, Illustrated

The first edition of this work. A very scarce work. Illustrated with thirty-two plates. The Phoenician inscriptions were discovered at Carthage, the capital city of the ancient Carthaginian civilization. The city developed from a Phoenician colony. Phoenicia was a Mediterranean civilization that originated in the Levant. It is generally believed to be on the coastal areas of modern day Lebanon, and on parts of northern Israel and southern Syria. The Phoenician alphabet was used for the writing in Phoenicia, and it was one of the most widely used writing systems at the time. The Phoenician alphabet is the oldest verified alphabet, and consists of twenty-two consonant letters. Phoenician is a Northern Semitic language. It is believed that it was derived from Egyptian hieroglyphs, and that that Greek alphabet derived from the Phoenician. Written by Nathan Davis, a British traveller and amateur excavator. He is best known for his work on the site of Carthage, and his published work 'Carthage and Her Remains'. Institutional label to the front pastedown.
