What Our Customers Say...

Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Scarce

Very scarce, first and only edition containing all monthly publications from the year 1861.

Bound in a half crushed-morocco binding on cloth boards.

Illustrations include thirteen illustrated plates and over thirty in-text illustrated engravings, from various notable artists of the day including J. D. Watson, J. L. Porter, Clarence Dobell, Alfred W. Cowper, and George du Maurier.

This is a wonderful work containing all of the monthly periodicals published through 'Good Words' in the year 1860. 'Good Words' was a nineteenth-century periodical that was directed at evangelicals and nonconformists, containing overtly religious materials as well as general fiction and non-fiction essays. It was stated the content was harmless enough that 'the devout should be able to read it on Sundays without sin', and later became known as a 'fireside read'.

Contents of this particular annual work includes 'As the Brightness of the Firmament- As the Stars for Ever and Ever' by Isaac Taylor, 'Humanity to the Dogs' by Lennie Orme, 'My First Geological Excursion: A Chapter of Geology for Boys' by Archibald Geikie, and 'Honesty is the Best Policy' by Hugh Stowell Brown.

Edited by Norman Macleod (1812-1872), a Scottish clergyman and author who also served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland from 1869 to 1870.

Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper, belonging to George Wilson, with the odd dried flower and fern pressed into pages throughout the text.

Collated, complete.
