Extracts bound from Volumes III, IV, and V of 'Cornhill Magazine', for 1861 to 1862.
Richard Doyle's entertaining series 'Birds-Eye Views of Society', serialised in the 'Cornhill Magazine', before its eventual publication in book form in 1894. The views provide satirical views of Victorian society.
This volume includes sixteen folding plates.
Views in this volume include 'At Home', 'A Juvenile Party', 'A Morning Party', 'A State Party', 'A County Ball', 'Bazaar and Fancy Fair', 'The Picture Sale', 'At the Sea-Side', 'A Popular Entertainment', 'Dining Down the River', 'Belgravia out of Doors', 'After Dinner', 'Rotten Row', 'A Concert', 'Conversazione: Science and Art', and 'The Smoking-Room at the Club'.
Illustrated by Richard Doyle, who was one of the illustrators for the 'Punch' Magazine, for whom he designed the cover for the first issue, as well as the masthead for the magazine.
From the library of Leonard Harrison Matthews, with his bookplate to the front paste down, and ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Matthews was a zoologist, best known for his research and writings on marine mammals. From 1951 to 1966 he was the director of the Zoological Society of London.
Condition
In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Spine is faded, with a little fading to the head of the boards. Spine and extremities are a little rubbed. Marks to the boards, a little heavier to the front board. Bookplate to the front paste down. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Pages 734 and 735 are adhered together to the fore edge, with pages 733 and 736 (which are not part of 'Birds Eye Views') adhered together, the same binding has occurred with pages 218-219, 338-339, 470-471, 582-583, 218-219, 588-589, 744-745, and 512-513.
