What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Uncommon

Alexis Benoit Soyer (1810-1858) was a French chef and the most popular chef in Victorian England. His life's work focused on poor relief and improving food provided to soldiers. He invented the 'Soyer stove', a field stove which was used by the British army until 1982. During the Great Irish Famine, he invented a soup kitchen opened in Dublin to feed thousands for free. The proceeds from his cookbook 'Soyer's Charitable Cookbook' was given to charity, as was the entrance fee at his art gallery. His works include 'The Gastronomic Regenerator', 'A Shilling Cookbook for the People' and 'The Patropheon: or, History of Food and its Preparation'.

Illustrated with vignette engravings throughout.

Contains classica Victorian recipes such as mutton broth, ox cheek soup, veal pudding, jellies, jams, cakes, ice cream and biscuits.

Condition

In a full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, a touch bumped to the extremities, some bumping to the head of the spine. Internally generally firmly bound, with both hinges strained but firm. Pages are a touch age toned, with the odd spot and a stain to page 169 having seeped through to a few leaves.
