What Our Customers Say...

Description

Fine Binding, Illustrated

Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'To our best friend with Xmas greetings from Paul, Helen and Maud 1877.' Illustrated, with a frontispiece, and numerous in-text engravings. With a life of Rogers to the start of the work. In a beautiful red morocco binding which is in a very smart condition. The final twenty pages have been damaged at the fore edge by insects, affecting the final two leaves textually and the final plate. Otherwise, to the other leaves only the margins are affected. Samuel Rogers was one of the most celebrated poets during his lifetime. However his fame has now been eclipsed by his Romantic colleagues and friends Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron.

Condition

In a full morocco binding. Externally, very smart with minor shelfwear to the extremities. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright. From page 280 onwards there is insect damage to the fore edge of pages, affecting the final four leaves the worst, with some loss to the text and images. Occasional scattered spots to pages.
