Illustrated with frontispiece, additional engraved title page, and ten further plates. Collated, complete. 

Samuel Johnson was an English author, well-known in the literary world for his many lasting contributions to various areas of humanist art, including poetry, essay-writing, biography, and more. He is described by the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies' as the most distinguished man of letters in English history. 

This biography is notable for its extensive reports of Johnson's conversation, compiled through Boswell's acquaintance of Johnson since 1763. Originally published in 1791. Featuring facsimile of the original title page.

Condition

In full calf prize binding with five raised bands, intricate gilt tooling to spine, titles in gilt to morocco spine label. Marbled edges and endpapers. Gilt lettering to front board. Externally sound with light wear to extremities. Boards lightly marked. Only minor cracking to head and tail of front joint, and head of rear joint, boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Faint tide mark to inner gutter head of frontispiece and engraved title page. Light spotting affecting occasional leaf, particularly first and last few and leaves of plates. Pages otherwise generally very clean throughout.
